Prof. ALI A. ALRAOUF, Ph.D., FAIA, FRIBA Prof. Alraouf is an architect, urban designer, planner and professor of architecture and urbanism interested in research and practice related to comprehensive sustainable design and urbanism. Alraouf received his education at the universities of Cairo, Egypt and California/Berkeley, USA. He has held permanent and visiting teaching and research positions at regional and international universities. Alraouf takes a human-centered approach to design that aspires to shape environmentally and socially just built-environments. He has advised organizations that range from the World Bank to the United Nations Development Program. He provides consultancy in numerous projects regionally and internationally and act as a consultant for international organizations include UNDP, UNEP, UN-Habitat, UNESCOW, ESCOWA, ICOMOS among others. Alraouf writes extensively in newspapers, periodicals, and architectural magazines regionally and internationally. He published more than 165 journal refereed papers, critical reviews, essays, in addition to books and book chapters. Alraouf writings have spanned many disciplines including research on Identity, Social Movements, Creativity, critical studies, tradition, heritage and globalization and their connection to the built environment. He is the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of many books in English and Arabic.
His latest book are Towards Holistic Climate-Responsive Planning for Equitable Places and Communities (2024) , City Reconstruction: Urban Policy Innovation Towards Sustainable Cities in the MENA Region (2025) and Architecture and Urbanism in Contemporary Qatar (2025). His writings were translated to Italian, German, Persian, Russian, Serbian, Austrian and Turkish. He was interviewed in prominent satellite networks including Euronews, BBC, CNN, and Aljazeera. Alraouf's current research interests are People-centered Architecture and Urbanism, Knowledge-based Urban Development, Post-Carbon Contemporary Gulf Cities, Museums in the Gulf, Urban revitalization of historical districts, Knowledge and Creative cities. He serves in editorial boards and acts as a reviewer for international journals and conferences. He was invited to act as a juror in international competition across the globe. Alraouf has travelled widely and has been a visiting scholar at the universities of UC-Berkeley, Belgrade, ITMO-St Petersburg, Russia, and Nis, Serbia. He has been invited to present his research work in more than 40 countries at universities and international institutions. Alraouf is the recipient of many grants and awards. In 2025, He was awarded the Distinguished Visiting Fellowship at ITOM University, St Petersburg. In addition to teaching and research, Alraouf is currently acts as Senior advisor of research and development at the Qatar urban planning sector and Head of Urban Lab and Design Studio in Qatar.
