SIIC Center - Qingdao International Beer City

UAP in collaboration with Shanghai Industrial Investment Corporation and SWA

Situated on the coastline of China's Yellow Sea, SIIC Center - Qingdao Beer City is home to the world's second largest International Beer Festival. UAP team in Shanghai led by Art + Design Associate Andrew Fumanski collaborated with Shanghai Industrial Investment Corporation (SIIC) and Landscape Architects SWA on the design, fabrication and installation of Emergence, a curved, brass entry canopy for this landmark civic development. It is considered not only a striking entry statement to employees and visitors of Qingdao Beer City but it also has shown a remarkable way to use metal in fabrication and construction.

According to Fumanski, "Often times in architectural projects with curves or grand gestures you see designs that stress material in unflattering ways - either through poor detailing, poor understanding of the material strengths and its weaknesses, or poor craftsmanship. Overall, the design, engineering accomplishment or the brass material finish smoothly arching overhead the canopy is an exemplary use of metal in design, fabrication and installation within the built environment."

Measuring only 0.6 x 1m at the base, Emergence expands to an 8m x 19m soffit, revealing dramatic arches and a generous architectural space. Standing at over 14m tall, the canopy emerges from the ground plane and soars above pedestrians, honouring the vision of the development by reflecting the city's growth. With over 850 brass panels, the canopy's surface is perforated by internal lighting, creating the illusion of shimmering lights on the water's surface at night.
