Set in the fast-growing suburb of Lekki in Lagos, Nigeria guest artist’s space provides a multifaceted living, working and public space for prominent British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare CBE. The scheme pays close attention to environmental control in the tropical climate providing spaces for visiting artists, friends and family.
This eco building will serve as a studio, gallery and home to the artist. The barrier free and inclusive design, is fully wheelchair accessible. The building houses Yinka’s private living space and the G.A.S Foundation, which will be a non-profit artist residency dedicated to facilitating international artistic exchange and developing creative practices between local and international artists. The site is part of the Lagos development masterplan and is less than 2 miles north from the Atlantic coastline.
The design draws influence from the artist and his works, in particular the façade screen is an architectural interpretation of Shonibare’s ‘And the wall fell away’. The perimeter screen encloses a ramp, which provides access to all floors. The ramp space serves as more than a functional means of circulation, it also integrates a vertical library space. The ground floor serves as public space, and includes a vibrant courtyard room for performances, parties, social gatherings and artist studios. The second floor provides accommodation for resident guest artists.
