Garden Hotpot Restaurant, MUDA-Architects

Situated in a superior ecological area of Chengdu, the design is to integrate local hotpot culture with natural environment. On the premise of paying the greatest respect to the site’s environment, MUDA-Architects decides to eliminate the architectural scale, leaving out walls, only using pillars and boards to lightly hide the building in the eucalyptus woods, letting the building gently integrate with the site and delineating the shape of lake in a light and peaceful way. Thin three-meter-tall columns support a roof canopy that meanders alongside the site’s lotus pond, which makes the building look like the steams and smokes from the boiling pots curling between the pillars and trees. Mirroring the galvanized steel canopy, the platform below is made of anti-corrosive wood and complements the surrounding green environment. The columns, which have a diameter of just 88 millimeters, allow the restaurant to blend into the woods. In order to respect the natural environment and minimize human intervention, MUDA conducted extensive mapping of the site. The building, and its distinctive roof canopy, was then designed in response to the location of eucalyptus trees and the lake itself. MUDA saw this project as an opportunity to experiment with small scale and low cost architecture. As the construction team was formed of local migrant workers, who have no professional knowledge and tools, the architects simplified complex structural nodes and made strategic adjustments. The whole building applied steel structure welding technology, which greatly shortens the construction period and reduces the cost.
