As part of the long-term growth of the University of Cambridge, its West Cambridge masterplan will accommodate numerous research institutions including physics, chemistry and engineering facilities relocated from the centre of Cambridge.
Jestico + Whiles is designing a dynamic new hub building at the heart of the site as part of the university's vision to transform it into a lively research campus.
The Hub will include a range of flexible spaces including social, study, office and teaching facilities to support existing needs and unlock future development on the site. The building will also include a new central catering facility serving the wider university.
The Hub will complement current campus facilities and foster collaboration and a sense of community among departments. This shared resource will help establish a sense of vibrancy and activity, providing much needed amenities to support neighbouring academic institutions and provide outreach opportunities for the local community.
The building will be highly flexible, responding to day-to-day changes in use and activity, and in the longer term will allow future adaptability to meet the university's changing requirements.
The scheme will be highly sustainable, and adopt many aspects of the 'WELL' standard - concerned with well-being, including good quantities of natural light, promoting the use of stairs, activity-based working, and biophilia.
